Connect Hamilton Acquired Brain Injury & Stroke Transitional Residence

Project Overview

Ira McDonald Construction was retained as Construction Manager by Connect Hamilton for the construction of a new two-storey transitional residence designed to support 42 residents recovering from acquired brain injuries (ABI) and strokes, in partnership with Hamilton Health Sciences.

Located adjacent to the Eramosa Karst Conservation Area, the facility thoughtfully integrates with its natural and residential surroundings. The residence features three two-storey residential wings connected by a shared two-storey common space that includes staff offices, a multipurpose community room, fitness and recreation areas, a library, and several resident support spaces.

Constructed using non-combustible prefabricated steel stud wall panels with structural steel and precast concrete floors, the building combines durability with efficiency. A 20′ x 30′ single-storey outbuilding was also built to serve as a workshop and gathering space, complete with a kitchenette and powder room for residents.

The project included comprehensive site preparation, phased construction, and coordinated servicing with significant road and sewer work along Upper Mt. Albion Road. The result is a purpose-built, accessible, and restorative environment designed to foster recovery, independence, and community connection.
