North Campus Recreation Facility Field House Addition

Project Overview

The Columbia Icefield Field House is a striking 70,000 sq. ft. addition to the existing Columbia Icefield Athletic Centre, designed to enhance athletic programming and recreation opportunities for students and varsity athletes alike.

This single-storey, 40-foot-high field house features clear open spans of nearly 200 feet, providing an unobstructed indoor field surface for multiple sports, including football, soccer, rugby, and recreational activities. The building also includes a mechanical mezzanine with provisions for future elevated running tracks and additional sport uses.

Built on a stable foundation with standard strip and spread footings, the facility’s structure is composed of structural steel framing, ribbed precast concrete panels, glazing systems, metal siding, and aluminum cladding.

Key features include:

  • 100 x 50 yard synthetic turf field (FIFA 2-Star certified) with resilient athletic flooring for multi-sport use.
  • Interior renovations and additions to the existing Columbia Icefield facility, including new showers and change rooms, completed in phases to maintain full operational continuity.
  • Viewing gallery and second-level running track with special light-diffusing glass on the south side to enhance visibility and comfort.
  • Stormwater infiltration gallery designed to conserve land and protect local water resources.
  • Construction executed with careful coordination due to proximity to a natural preservation area.
